Rescue efforts continued after the quake toppled the Weiguan Jinlong building, a residential complex in Tainan. Taiwan’s Premier San-Cheng Cheng visited survivors receiving treatment at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Hospital, including Tsung-tian Lee, on February 10.

Premier Cheng was accompanied by NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su to visit the survivors in the hospital and the disaster zone as well.

He was impressed by NCKU Hospital’s efficient deployment of manpower, rescue efforts, and trauma counseling for the survivors.

NCKU Hospital provided a large team of people to the earthquake relief efforts in the Weiguan Jinlong building.

NCKU Hospital had taken in 96 survivors in total, with 23 patients are currently hospitalized, and 8 people in the hospital's critical care units, according to NCKU Hospital Vice President Dr. Bor-Shyang Sheu.

He added, an emergency response team of 53 doctors, 131 nurses, and 78 people from the departments of administration and medicine were involved in the action of rescuing.

Knowing that post-trauma psychological rehabilitation is essential, the nurses teamed up with social workers and psychologists to provide patients and their family the necessary medical care and mental support.

They scheduled daily morning meeting to discuss the physical and mental condition of the survivors and then visited them one by one in the wards. At 4pm meeting, they followed up the patients conditions, exchanged ideas and discussed for further assessment.

Before the Lunar New Year holidays, the nursing department had done personnel inventory of more than a thousand hospital staff nurses, which helped to mobilize resources and make proper planning.

In addition, a great number of health-care professionals volunteer their services to help victims in the disaster sites.

A medical station established at National Cheng Kung University Hospital on February 6 by a regional emergency operations center was shut down at 10:45am yesterday after operating for 192 hours in support of search-and-rescue teams at the Weiguan Jinlong disaster site.
