National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) today presented diplomas to three of its former students who were jailed and forced to drop out of school during the White Terror period.

The university hosted a press conference on February 24 to award the three former students, Wu Jung-yuan (吳榮元), Wu Chun-hung (吳俊宏) and Chin Him San (陳欽生), their undergraduate diplomas 45 years after they were arrested and forced to drop out of school during the White Terror era.

At the press conference, President Huey-Jen Jenny Su on behalf of the university presented the diplomas to the three men their undergraduate diplomas at the university museum in Tainan.

Among them were Wu Jung-yuan (吳榮元) and Wu Chun-hung (吳俊宏), who were arrested in 1972 for organizing a communist party at NCKU.

They were later imprisoned on Green Island for 15 years and 10 years, respectively.

The third person was Chin Him San (陳欽生) of Malaysia, who was wrongfully accused of being the mastermind behind the bombing of the United States Information Service in Tainan in 1971 and was imprisoned for 12 years on Green Island.

Also attending the ceremony was Teng Po-chen (鄧伯宸), who was also arrested in the NCKU communist party case in 1972, several months after his graduation.

He was later imprisoned in Taipei for four years.

According to an investigation by NCKU, 11 of its students were arrested between 1971 and 1973, and seven of them were forced to discontinue their studies.

NCKU said it will continue to look for the other four and will seek to award diplomas to them.
