NCKU Professor Named as Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry

Professor Yu-Cheng Lin from Department of Engineering Science at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), who has frontier and innovative scientific achievement, has been named as Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2008. Professor Lin is one of six Taiwanese RSC Fellows since its establishment from 1841. Furthermore, Prof. Lin is the only RSC Fellow ever with a background of non-chemistry major. Seemingly, the impact of Prof. Lin’s attribution to scientific advancement in related chemical fields is not less than those with chemistry backgrounds.

Professor Lin’s research interests mainly apply to rapid medical detection and establishment of platform for medical technology from combined knowledge in electric engineering, mechanic engineering and biomedical science. His research interests include: (1) design and microfabrication techniques; (2) micro biochemical sensors; (3) development of DNA chip, (4) electroporation chip for gene transfection, (5) quantum dots as the reporter in cells, (6) electroporation devices for transgenic zebra fishes, and (7) nanoparticle effects in PCR. The main research interests are combining nanoparticles and micro-systems in biomedical applications.

One of Professor Lin’s scientific achievements is to develop a bio-chip in which the quantity of samples can be reduced significantly but the accuracy can be uplifted to 20 times than conventional chip. His achievement has profoundly attributed to the performance and applications of DNA chips.

Professor Lin also has developed a micro PCR chip, which has not only rendered a better efficiency than conventional one, but also more economical usage on expensive medicine as well as potential of mass production to reduce the bio-detection cost.

Furthermore, Professor Lin has devoted himself in development of nanotechnology applied to the medical detection related fields. Additionally, he has invented various cost-effective methods to fabrication of various kinds of nanoparticles, such as magnetic and metal nanoparticles as well as quantum dots. These have been successfully applied to micro PCR chips, immunity detection and cell transfection. Recently, combining knowledge in micro-mechanoelectric fabrication and gene transfection, Professor Lin has also been dedicated to advancement of gene-transfection chip, from which fruitful scientific outcomes with great novelty are harvested and appear in many high-impact prestigious academic journals.

Professor Lin has authored many academic articles about electroporation chip for gene transfection and been published on highly recognized international journals with high impact factor.

Professor Lin’s academic achievement can also be reflected on nearly 60 articles authored by him on SCI journals since 2003, various research projects, continuous supports from National Science Council in 6 successive years since 2003, and instructing students on prize-awarded dissertations or projects.

Professor Lin also has been invited as a visiting scholar in Guthrie Medical Center, Arizona State University, Case Western University and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Professor Yu-Cheng Lin earned his BS and MS degree in Mechanical Engineering in NCKU and turned his research field into Electrical Engineering in University of Illinois-Chicago, where he received his MS and PhD degree before his faculty appointment in NCKU.
