NCKU Alumni Facilitated the Establishment of the Southern Taiwan Science Park

Forming the torch, sparkles light the Southern Taiwan Science Park! Nearly 30 years ago, a group of NCKU alumni were busy with communicating, collecting data, holding international conferences and starting a petition: the pass of New Establishment of Science Park Act. Their pursuit was not fame nor profit but the contribution to their home country: Tainan. On January 16th, the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) held an opening ceremony of the stone tablet and tree-planting, which demonstrates the contribution of National Cheng Kung University Alumni Association of North America (NCKUAANA).

“Creating power, unity leads to success.” With all-round discussion and striving, the Six-Year National Construction Plan, led by Executive Yuan, approved that the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) would be located in Tainan (Districts of Sinshih, Shanhua, and Anding) in 1995, and would enhance the development of high technology in southern Taiwan. By building consensus among various perspectives and opinions, alumni of NCKUAANA had a significant impact on the establishment of STSP.
 
From 1992 to 1994, NCKUNAAA furthered the establishment of STSP. Mou-Ying, Fu, the alumna of Chemical Engineering of 1965, who was the president of Cheng Kung University Alumni Association of Middle-West, initiated the foundation of NCKUAANA by uniting more than 20 NCKU alumni associations in the United States, which has a far-reaching impact until now.

In 2022, STSP held an opening ceremony of the stone tablet and tree-planting at the northern square of STSP Bureau.
 
NCKUAANA gelled alumni from Houston, Massachusetts, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., the Northwest, Northern California, Northern California, Florida, and Michigan and invited scholars from various fields to hold joint meetings and urge to pass New Establishment of Science Park Act. According to Mou-Ying Fu, “we collected data, scouted for lands, called for participations, held meetings, and met governmental organizations for 4-5 years. We key members had regularly video conferences every month for half a year, encountered many difficulties, and finally facilitated STSP to be located in Tainan.”
 
 “We don’t need fame nor profit,” Mou-Ying Fu mentioned in her remote interview, “there are a group of NCKU alumni who are eager to contribute to NCKU. They expect STSP will be located in Tainan, which will foster a close cooperation between academia and industry and create a positive interaction between NCKU and the local. In addition, the technological development will reach a balance between southern and northern Taiwan. ”

30 years ago, with the effort of NCKU alumni, STSP was approved to be located in Tainan. In 2022, STSP held an opening ceremony of the stone tablet and tree-planting. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, president of NCKU, Fong-Chin Su, executive vice president of NCKU, Yuh-Neu Chen, executive vice president of NCKU, Po-Chang Hsu, Chi-Hsin Yeh, alumni of NCKUAANA, Tsung-Tsong Wu, minister of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Chen-Kang Su, director-general of STSP Bureau, and Chein Tai, deputy mayor of Tainan city, planted three Ormosia formosana Kaneh (a Taiwan endemic species) at the northern square of STSP Bureau, which symbolizes that Taiwan’s native plant will root in the land of technological development and expects the thriving future of STSP.

Huey-Jen Jenny Su, president of NCKU, pointed out that NCKU has participated in and dedicated to the development of Tainan for 90 years. In 1934, the first graduates of NCKU had devoted to the development of Taiwan’s heavy industry. All of them are parts Taiwan’s history of industrial development. “We are so lucky to grow up with STSP. There are lots of people who devoted and participated in this remarkable history. By gathering and then forming a torch, sparkles will light Taiwan sustainably.”
 
Tsung-Tsong Wu, minister of MOST, mentioned that the revenue of STSP was amounted to more than trillion in 2021. MOST will continuously cultivate STSP as a livable community for living, working, getting married, and raising children. In 1990, STSP had its first base and expanded the park to the third base in 2020. Industries in STSP include opto-electronic engineering, integrated circuit, precision machinery, biotechnology, and green energy. STSP plans to develop smart machinery, precision health, and innovative industries in 2023.

On December 1st, 2021, NCKU hosted a forum, “Sparkles Form the torch: North America and South Taiwan,” to review the history and look to the future development of STSP. 30 years ago, NCKUAANA committed to the establishment of STSP and provided talent pool for it. Effort of NCKUAANA alumni symbolized the spirits of NCKU: Creation, Independence, Corporation, and Pioneering. By fulfilling university responsibility, NCKU will step to 100th anniversary in 2031 and will continuously create a harmonious and prosperous environment with gratitude in southern Taiwan.
