Three NCKU Alumni Elected Academicians of Academia Sinica: Kai-Nan An and Yu-Pen Su of Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, and Tze-Chiang Chen of Dept. of Physics

Academia Sinica announced the newly elected Academicians and Honorary Academicians after the 33rd Academicians Election on July 7, which elected 19 new Academicians this year. Alumni of National Cheng Kung University consist over half of the Academicians in the Division of Engineering Sciences. Among the five Academicians in the Division of Engineering Sciences, the three NCKU alumni are Kai-Nan An, Yu-Pen Su, and Tze-Chiang (T.C.) Chen.
Kai-Nan An （安介南）
Kai-Nan An graduated from NCKU Dept. of Mechanical Engineering in 1969 as the top student of his class and is currently a Visiting Chair Professor at NCKU. Yu-Pen Su graduated from NCKU Dept. of Mechanical Engineering in 1970 and is currently a consultant at National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technolog. Tze-Chiang Chen graduated from NCKU Dept. of Physics and is currently the President of Strategy, Science and Technology at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. Seeing NCKU alumni receive recognition for their achievements brings pride and happiness to all fellow NCKU faculty and students.
Kai-Nan An, currently a Visiting Chair Professor at NCKU, received NCKU’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996, and in 2018 received the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award. After graduating top of the class in 1969 from NCKU, he attained his Master’s and PhD degrees in the U.S.A. and later began conducting research in orthopaedics and biomechanics at Mayo Clinic. His research produced a total of 250 papers published in internationally famous journals, which are highly recognized, acclaimed, and cited, earning him international reputation in biomechanics.
Kai-Nan An has grand achievements in terms of biomedical engineering and orthopaedics. Many problems relating to the human musculoskeletal system were efficiently solved through applying his innovative theories and methods in mechanics and mechanical sciences. Because of his outstanding contributions, he was elected director of American Society of Biomechanics and was appointed an advisory board member of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) of U.S.A. National Institutes of Health. He takes on active, important roles in the American Orthopaedic Research Society, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, Orthopaedic Research Education Foundation, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
In addition to his significant contributions to improving academic research, orthopaedic treatments and medical devices technologies, Kai-Nan An, with deep love for Taiwan and honored as an alumnus of NCKU, has since 1983 assisted NCKU professor You-Li Chou in establishing the standardized and systemized orthopaedics and rehabilitation biomechanical research group and research center. The research sites became key location in the development of the nation’s academic research on biomechanics and propelled crucial steps for research developments. Kai-Nan An further facilitated the establishment the Taiwanese Society of Biomechanics, prompting rigorous development in the nation’s academic research on biomechanics. NCKU is honored to have such an alumnus who devotes himself to guiding the academic development and establishment of NCKU Dept. of Biomedical Engineering and conducts two-way academic collaboration with the biomechanical research group at the university’s Dept. of Biomedical Engineering with the aim to elevate the department to international academic research level.
Yu-Pen Su （蘇玉本）
Yu-Pen Su, who graduated from NCKU Dept. of Mechanical Engineering in 1970, is currently a consultant at National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and has worked for many years in the NCSIST Missile and Rocket Systems Research Division, standing in leading position for Taiwan’s missile and rocket development. He has received recognition awards such as model civil servant award and outstanding contributing civil servant award, which testify to his grand contributions to Taiwan’s top-level military technologies.
Yu-Pen Su is among international leading experts on aerospace propulsion, power, and systems. He has made innovative contributions in terms of basic research, technological development, and engineering application. The missile and rocket systems which he led in developing take up distinctly pioneering positions among related fields worldwide.
Yu-Pen Su has served several years working at the NCSIST Missile and Rocket Systems Research Division, going through positions of researcher, vice director, and director. Moreover, he directed other aerospace programs and played key roles in terms of the research and development of solid-propellant rocket engine, liquid ramjet engine, liquid-propellant rocket engine, and turbofan engine, as well as the development of related electrical mechanics and system integration. His efforts made the foundation for the successful development of the missile systems such as Tien Kung-1, Hsiung Feng III, Hsiung Feng II, Hsiung Feng IIE, and Wan Chien. Furthermore, his research in hypersonic aerial vehicles facilitates in trengthening the nation’s self-defense.
Tze-Chiang Chen, currently the President of Strategy, Science and Technology at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, graduated from NCKU Dept. of Physics in 1974 and attained his Master’s degree in Physics in 1976. Afterwards he studied electrical engineering at Yale University in the U.S.A. and attained his PhD degree in 1985. He joined the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in 1984.
Tze-Chiang Chen received NCKU’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007 under recommendation from the Dept. of Physics. Chen’s early research in advanced bipolar technology had a major impact on IBM S/390 mainframe systems. From 1992 to 1999, he was the Senior Manager responsible for the 64Mb/256Mb/1Gb DRAM Technology Development in IBM/Siemens/Toshiba DRAM Development Alliance. From 1999 to 2003, he worked as the Director of Advanced Logic/Memory Technology Development at the Semiconductor Research and Development Center, IBM Microelectronics Division. It was during this period when he included Taiwanese Nanya Technology Corporation into the IBM DRAM Alliance.
Tze-Chiang Chen has for many years played the key role in international CMOS technology development and application and has been an invited speaker at numerous international academic and industrial seminars. His achievements have earned him recognition in various areas, consecutively elected as IBM Distinguished Engineer in 1996, IEEE Fellow in 1998, and IBM Fellow in 1999. In 2005, he was elected APS Fellow and received the Asian American Engineer of the Year award. He received technological award from Yale in 2006.
