NCKU Ranks Top Place in the 2023 CommonWealth “Excellence in University Social Responsibility” Awards

National Cheng Kung University is ranked first place in “Excellence in University Social Responsibility” Awards held by the CommonWealth Magazine, coming out on top among competitors in the category of large public universities (over 6,000 students). The awards ceremony was held on September 20th at Taipei Shangri-La Hotel. In recent years, USR has become the primary core element of NCKU’s administrative affairs and development, with SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) as its main focus. The university is fully committed to enhancing the social awareness and practical abilities of its faculty and students, which is a crucial driving force for the sustainable development of universities and the society.

Yuh-Neu Chen, Executive Vice President of NCKU, attended the awards ceremony on behalf of President Meng-Ru Shen. She expressed gratitude to CommonWealth Magazine for organizing the “Excellence in University Social Responsibility” Surveys. NCKU was honored as to be recognized as the first place in the large public university category for 2023. “This is a great affirmation and encouragement to our university’s efforts in promoting social responsibility and the dedication of our faculty and students.” She pointed out that NCKU has kept true to the spirit of contributing to society long since its establishment as the Tainan Technical College in 1931. The first President, Wakatsuki Michitaka, expected the faculty and students of the school to develop practicality, diligence, effective communication, cooperation, and social responsibility closely aligned with societal needs. “We refer to this as the DNA of NCKU, humble but shining, and dedicated to prosper mutually with the society.”
Vice President Yuh-Neu Chen pointed out that NCKU has incorporated the UN’s 2030 SDGs into its school development goals in 2016, demonstrating the demonstrating the university’s determination to take on social responsibilities.

In the field of knowledge and technology transfer, NCKU offers KNOWHOW to promote the enhancement of traditional industries and agricultural technology. The university reaches out to remote regions, uncovering elements that can rejuvenate local cultures, allowing the new generation to connect with their hometowns promote cultural heritage for regeneration. As a think tank for social sustainability, NCKU assists local governments in establishing elder-friendly communities. The university nurtures next generational talents, fostering collaborative innovations between the young and the elderly. It pays attention to marine and wetland ecology, engages in the rescue and research of cetaceans. It advocates for home-based hospice and palliative care and companionship, and contributes to the cultivation of international medical personnel.

All of these efforts by NCKU are aimed at coexisting and co-creating a better urban and global society.
