The Swedish Trade & Invest Council Visits National Cheng Kung University Hospital Sharing Sweden’s Experience in Resilient Hospital Design to Deepen Exchanges in Smart and Sustainable Healthcare

To enhance collaboration and exchange with Sweden in smart healthcare and sustainable hospital design, Ms. Helena Reitberger, Swedish Representative to Taiwan, The Swedish Trade & Invest Council, and Mr. Martin Vercouter, Commercial Section Director, visited National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKUH) on November 11, 2025. The meeting was coordinated by the “NCKU Shalun Healthcare and Innovation Park Implementation Office” of National Cheng Kung University and focused on Sweden’s practical experience in resilient hospital design and sustainable medical transformation. Discussions were held with NCKUH Superintendent Dr. Jing-Wei Lee, Chairperson Dr. Wen-Chien Ko, and the hospital’s leadership team.

During the meeting, The Swedish Trade & Invest Council presented the core principles of Sweden’s healthcare system—flexibility, resilience, and sustainability—and described how Swedish hospitals strengthen their adaptability and continuity of medical services in the face of public health challenges and extreme climate events through architectural design and system planning. The delegation highlighted the Karolinska University Hospital’s “Project Chopin” (later completed as O-Huset) as an example. The new surgical building is designed to swiftly convert operating rooms into intensive care units in emergency situations, providing up to 64 ICU beds. This flexible design proved highly effective during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since become an important reference model in international medical architecture. Additionally, Hudiksvall Hospital’s use of modular composite units to construct temporary operating rooms demonstrated how such systems can be rapidly assembled while maintaining independent air conditioning, power supply, and medical equipment, ensuring both continuity of healthcare services during construction and alignment with environmental sustainability goals.

This visit strengthened mutual understanding of smart healthcare development and sustainable hospital design. NCKU Shalun Healthcare and Innovation Park Implementation Office looks forward to continued collaboration with partners in the fields of medical innovation and sustainable healthcare, working together to promote the development of resilient and forward-looking medical environments.
