Chair Prof. Cary Chiou the Glory of NCKU

Chair Prof. Cary Chiou of Department of Environmental Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, one of highly-cited scholars in Taiwan according to the academic research survey of Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI), celebrated his 70th birthday on November 22nd, where NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung led nearly 20 faculty members and students from College of Engineering and Department of Environmental Engineering and their families to celebrate his birthday in a restaurant at Zenda Suites.

NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung has personally asked Chair Prof. Cary Chiou to continue assist NCKU to create more fruitful research achievements and to help NCKU progress toward an internationally top university, and Chair Prof. Cary Chiou has shown appreciation toward NCKU and Department of Environmental Engineering in providing an excellent environment for teaching and research.

“It is a right choice to return to NCKU and one of the happiest moments in my life to celebrate 70th anniversary at my alma mater,” said Chair Prof. Cary Chiou, who obtained his bachelor degree of Chemical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University.

Specialized in the fields of organic environmental contamination, transport, fate and remediation, Chair Prof. Cary Chiou is one of the high-cited scholars in the two fields of scientific research, i.e., Ecology/Environment and Engineering, according to the academic research survey, which categorized the world into 21 fields, done by Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).

Chair Prof. Cary Chiou has published over 100 papers, which have been cited over 7,000 times by Science Citation Index (SCI), in international renowned journals and his physical concept of soil-water equilibria for nonionic organic compounds, published in the journal Science, has won the 1999 ASSEP Outstanding Publication Award.

Chair Prof. Cary Chiou obtained his bachelor degree of Chemical Engineering from National Cheng Kung University in 1965, master degree of Physical and Surface Chemistry from Kent State University, U.S., in 1970, and doctoral degree of Physical and Surface Chemistry from Kent State University, U.S., in 1973.

Chair Prof. Chiou has received numerous awards and honors, including U.S. Geological Survey Special Achievement Award in 1985, Distinguished Achievement Award, the Rocky Mountains Chinese Society of Science and Engineering, in 1989, Outstanding Publication Award, the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP), in 1999, Author of one of the 10 High-Impact Papers in the Journal of Environmental Science & Technology in 2001, Highly Cited Researcher in Ecology/Environment, and Highly Cited Researcher in Engineering.

According to the 2009 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), National Cheng Kung University has moved up 88 places and is ranked the 262, mainly due to the efforts of Chair Prof. Cary Chiou and President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai.
