NCKU hosts international conference on earth observations and social impacts
Tainan, Taiwan, June 24, 2013
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosts the 2013 International Conference on Earth Observations and Social Impacts (ICEO&SI), June 23-25, with approximately 200 experts and scholars from 14 countries abroad including Japan, Korea, USA, and Germany to share the recent research findings relating to the studies of earth observations.
NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung who is also the Advisor of the Taiwan Group on Earth Observations serving as the Honorary Chairman of 2013 ICEO&SI attends the opening ceremony, June 24, welcomes the guests from the world.
“The NCKU together with Taiwan Group on Earth Observations (TGEO) will assemble their entire research community, and engage with other key international researchers to lead the research and development for knowledge and technology on earth observations such that to contribute to the world on avoiding the natural disasters and reducing societal impacts.” claimed President Hwung.
He also said, “Big data and other related analysis are very important for the earth observations in the nest stage.”
Former Vice President of Taiwan Annette Lu as the host of the conference said, “The nine issues we are discussing today and tomorrow including agriculture, biodiversity, climate change, disasters, ecosystems, energy, health, water resources, weather are so important and urgent but unfortunately the significant of these issues has been ignored.”
Lu pointed out, “The Natural Disaster Hotspots published by World Bank in 2005 indicated that 73% of Taiwan is exposed to at least 3 natural disasters.”
She stressed the sustainability of life, “I have been promoting a philosophy of Form Balanced Interests of Values（四生共榮）– the value of life, the span of livelihood, the quality of environment, the benefit of industrial investment.”
“Without life, nothing is there; without earth, no life can survive,” Lu added.
The keynote speakers for ICEO & SI 2013 are Dr. Yasushi Yamaguchi from Nagoya University, Japan, Dr. Kiwon Lee from Hansung University, Seoul, Korea, Dr. Rainer Sandau from Baylor University, Texas, USA, Dr. Xin Li, from Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Dr. Kumar Navulur from Denver University.
Dr. Ming-Chee Wu, Chairman of ICEO & SI 2013 organizing committee said that the conference includes plenary sessions for oral and poster paper presentations, addressing the critical importance of earth observations related areas.
Wu noted that ICEO & SI 2013 is aiming the sustainability of global environment, and seeking the views and creative ideas from the international community in anticipating the advancing developments of science and technology, the capacity building, and the user engagement.
The ICEO&SI was initiated by the TGEO in 2010 and has becoming an annual platform for the people who care about the sustainable development of the earth to exchange and share knowledge and experiences, according to Dr. Yuei-An Liou, essentially to find the solutions to resolve the threats the human beings are facing nowadays.
