On July 20th, National Cheng Kung University held 2021 honorary doctorate conferment ceremony at historic Ge-Chi Hall. Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, President of NCKU, awarded Jason Chang, Chairman of Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE), the honorary doctorate certificate. She praised Chair Chang’s leadership of ASE and his contribution to semiconductor assembly and testing industry of Taiwan. Recognizing NCKU motto, Veritas et Conscientia, which means “seek for truth, toil for good,” Chair Chang expected to honor Taiwan with closer and deeper collaboration between NCKU and ASE.

On July, 20th, NCKU held 2021 honorary doctorate conferment ceremony and awarded Jason Chang, Chairman of ASE, the honorary doctorate.
President Su mentioned that in the semiconductor industry, especially in the field of semiconductor assembly and testing, Chair Chang’s significant innovation and contribution are the ideal of the top academic organizations all over the world. Chair Chang’s foresight led ASE successfully commercialized copper wire bond technique, which built standard and landmark of this industry. In 2014, Chair Chang has received the SEMI Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution.

Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, President of NCKU, believes that talents are the base of innovation. She appreciates innovative and comprehensive projects collaborated by ASE and NCKU.
President Su believes that talents are the base of innovation. NCKU College of Engineering and ASE has started relevant industry-academia cooperations to cultivate talents of semiconductor assembly technique since 2012. At the same year, ASE lecture was established to award professors, offer scholarship, encourage talents, and create win-win situations between industry and academia. In 2021, NCKU launched the first Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing (AISSM) in Taiwan. President Su appreciates the participation of ASE, NCKU’s significant business partner, and looks forward to more innovative and comprehensive collaborations in the future.

Chair Jason Chang expects to honor Taiwan with closer and deeper collaboration between NCKU and ASE.
In his speech, Chair Chang acclaimed NCKU’s cultivation of professionals and felt honored to receive the honorary doctorate. The initial goal of ASE is to let clients satisfied, promise employees happiness and make ASE benefit Taiwan. Indeed, ASE always strive for this ideal. Chair Chang agrees with the NCKU motto and thanks NCKU to support innovation and cultivation. Nowadays, while the technique shows a considerable progress, Chair Chang uplifts all members of ASE to put NCKU motto into practice, to achieve a breakthrough and to create a new age.
Chair Chang reckons research and innovation as core values of promoting competitiveness. He expects NCKU and ASE will create a prosperity of semiconductor assembly in Taiwan. According to Chang, 2022 is his mother, Madam Chang Yao Hung-Ying, centennial birthday anniversary and therefore is meaningful to him. He expressed special thanks to participation and blessing from his family and colleagues, “your encouragement is always my energy,” said Chair Chang.

Chair Chang also sent NCKU a gift, a wafer with the transfer-printed Banyan tree of NCKU.
In the ceremony, President Su turned Chair Chang’s tassel and presented him honorary doctorate certificate. Chair Chang also sent NCKU a gift, a wafer with the transfer-printed Banyan tree of NCKU, which means “Successful cultivation, shining achievement.”
Earning global recognition, Chair Chang, who led ASE to become the top industry of semiconductor assembly, shows his leadership, will, and executive power in Taiwan’s economic development and related industries. Not only devoting to cultivation, but ASE also dedicated to environmental protection, ecological conservation and social concern. By actively involved in corporate social responsibility, ASE got the top grades of Dow Jones Sustainability Indices World Index, the first corporate which got the top grade for 6 consecutive years in Taiwan.
Chair Jason Chang got his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering of National Taiwan University, as well as received master’s degree in industrial engineering of Illinois Institute of Technology, U.S.A. In 1984, he established ASE in Kaohsiung Nanzih Export Processing Zone to supply IC assembly service for international semiconductor industry.

On July 20th, NCKU held a hearty and touching honorary doctorate conferment ceremony at Ge-Chi Hall.
Though ASE faced the turbulent market environment at the very beginning of its establishment, Chair Chang did not downsize the company. In a short space of time, he led ASE to develop high quality wafer surface-mount technology, boosted investment to extend the capacity and then built the niche market. This strategy made ASE go beyond its competitors and become the most notable assembly industry with the highest market value in the world.
ASE embraces sustainable development as its ideal and seeks for breakthroughs on the assembly technique. In 2012, having assembly technique as the core value of development, ASE collaborated with NCKU on three technical aspects: assembly technique, automatic technique and environmental technique. Till now, 6 professors were awarded within 8 years and more than 82 projects were implemented. Scholarship for professors and students is more than twenty million eight hundred thousand NT dollars, and the total expenses of industrial-academia is more than one hundred million NT dollars.

Directors from Siliconware Precision Industries made banners and cards to celebrate Chair Chang’s honorary doctorate conferment.
Being dedicated to gathering, retaining and cultivating talents, ASE is optimistic about semiconductor industry of Taiwan and supports NCKU AISSM, which provides students more opportunities to bridge the academia and industry. Chair Chang demonstrates his excellent foresight, leadership, will, and executive power to enhance the management and sustainable development of ASE. Being the model of cooperate social responsibility, ASE has gotten the honor of “Semiconductor Group Industry Leader” for 6 consecutive years since 2016, which indicates ASE’s significant achievement.
Chair Chang’s family returned Taiwan, got through 3+4 quarantine period, to celebrate his honor. Besides, president of ASE, Richard Chang, CEO Mr. Wu, directors from ASE parent companies, Siliconware Precision Industries, Universal Scientific Industrial, and ASE Zhongli and Kaohsiung parks all participated in the ceremony. All the members show their congratulations and share the essential moments of Chair Chang.

Holding cards, directors from ASE Zhongli and Kaohsiung took photos with Chair Chang to celebrate his essential moment.
